How to Make Your Hair Color Last Longer Between Visits

You’ve just paid for colour you love. Here’s how to still love it in eight weeks.
Wait before the first wash
Give it 48 hours if you can. The cuticle is still settling after colouring, and washing too soon lets pigment escape before it’s properly locked in.
Turn the water down
Hot water opens the cuticle and colour washes straight out. Lukewarm to wash, cool to rinse. It is genuinely one of the highest-impact changes you can make, and it costs nothing.
Wash less often
Every wash removes some colour. Most people wash more than their hair needs. Try stretching to every second or third day — dry shampoo covers the gap, and your scalp adjusts within a couple of weeks.
Sulphate-free shampoo is not upselling
Sulphates are aggressive detergents. They clean well and they strip colour fast, particularly reds and coppers, which are the largest pigment molecules and the first to go. A colour-safe shampoo is the difference between colour fading gracefully and colour going brassy.
Protect it from heat
Every pass of a straightener without heat protectant costs you colour and condition. Use protectant every time, and turn the temperature down — most people style far hotter than they need to.
Watch the sun and the pool
UV fades colour like it fades fabric. A hat on long sunny days genuinely helps. Chlorine is worse, and it’s what turns blonde green. Wet your hair with clean water before swimming — saturated hair absorbs less pool water — and rinse straight after.
Book a gloss between colour appointments
A gloss is a quick, low-commitment service that refreshes tone and adds shine without lifting or depositing permanent colour. Booked halfway between colour appointments, it keeps blondes from going brassy and brunettes from going flat — and it can stretch the gap between full colours, which saves you money.
If you’re covering grey
Root regrowth is about growth rate, not product. Hair grows roughly half an inch a month, so most clients need a root touch-up every four to six weeks regardless of how well they care for the colour. Ask about balayage or a root smudge if you’d like the regrowth line to be softer and less urgent.
