Your Bridal Hair Timeline: What to Book and When
Most bridal hair stress is scheduling stress. Here’s the timeline that avoids it.
8–12 months out: book the date
Book your stylist as soon as you have a venue. Saturdays in peak season go first, and if you have a large bridal party you need a stylist who can commit the hours.
6 months out: start colour, if you’re changing it
If you want to be significantly lighter or darker on the day, start now. Big colour changes take multiple sessions to do safely, and rushing that is how hair gets damaged six weeks before a wedding. Starting early also means you get to live with the colour and adjust it.
3 months out: book the trial
Your trial is the single most valuable appointment in this list.
Bring:
- Photos of styles you like — and ones you don’t
- A photo of your dress, especially the neckline and back
- Your veil, hairpiece or any accessories you’ll actually wear
- Any extensions you plan to use
Wear a top with a similar neckline to your dress, and do your makeup roughly as you plan to on the day. It sounds fussy; it’s the difference between a trial that tells you something and one that doesn’t.
Take photos at the end from every angle, including the back, in daylight. What looks right in the mirror can read differently in photographs.
6–8 weeks out: last big colour appointment
Any significant colour work should be done now, so it has time to settle and you have room for a correction if you want one.
2–3 weeks out: final trim and gloss
A trim keeps the ends sharp for photos. A gloss adds shine without changing your colour. Close enough to the day to look fresh, far enough away that nothing is a surprise.
The week of: leave it alone
No new products, no experiments, no last-minute deep conditioning treatment you’ve never used. Wash your hair the day before rather than the morning of — day-old hair holds a style far better than freshly washed hair.
The morning: build in more time than you think
Work backwards from your photographer’s arrival, not from the ceremony. Hair first, makeup second, dress last. If you have a bridal party, allow a realistic slot per person and add a buffer — someone is always running late, and it should not be you.
